Squash confirmed to be in the 2028 Olympic Games!

Invented in England in the early 19th Century, squash is a racquet sport played in a four-walled court between two players, or four in doubles competition. In squash, players take turns striking the ball to playable areas on the walls in hopes of securing a point when their opponent is unable to return the ball. The Olympic committee has recently included squash as one of the sports to compete in for the 2028 Olympic games. This is a breakthrough moment for the Squash community, as many Squash athletes have worked hard to gain recognition in the competition.

What is Squash?

If you are already into racquet games like tennis and badminton, squash is a great sport to get into for the New Year. Played in an indoor court, the purpose of squash is to make the squash rubber ball bounce two times on the floor before the challenger hits it back. A variety of shots can be used, including a forehand, backhand, drop shot, cross court and others. Shots can also be deflected off the side or back wall before striking the front wall. The player who wins the volley when their opponent is unable to make a valid return on the ball is awarded a point. A squash game is typically played to 11 points, with the victor having to win by at least two points. With the rise in popularity of this racquet sport, Tenniszon can get started with all the gear in store!

How to Play Squash?

To play squash, you need at least two squash racquets, one squash ball and two pairs of sports goggles. The goal of the game is to make the ball bounce once on the floor before the opponent hits it back. The ball must travel from the front wall to the opposite back corner. The ball is out when it hits the tin or out line, when it hits above the out of court line, when it bounces on the floor more than once before being hit, or when a serve lands in the incorrect area.

There are 2 methods of scoring: Firstly, Point-A-Rally and secondly Serve-In Scoring. Point-A-Rally is a game where players play until a player gets 11 points regardless who serves while serve-in scoring games are played up to 9 points, where players have to win a rally while they are serving to score a point. After playing a shot, you must give the other player space to play the ball, otherwise it will be called a ‘stroke ball’,  where the swing is obstructed by the opponent. A ‘let ball’ is awarded if the opponent was not ready to receive the ball. When a let ball occurs, no point is awarded and it is replayed.
